How to Have a Rich Life and Just What is it?

by Dennis Perry on September 21, 2011

If I were to ask you the question, “What does create and live a rich life mean to you?” I suspect that there would be about as many answers as there were people answering.  The concept of a rich life or what it means to live richly is deeply personal.  We will all have our own interpretation or definition.

When I ask this question in most cases the first response I get is financial.  Money is the first thing that most people think of when they consider what it means to live richly.

Money is most definitely important but I submit that there is much more to it than that.  I have been rather poor and I have been what many consider rich.  And I must say, if I had to choose between the two, I would choose rich.

Having money creates a lot more possibilities for you and makes many things easier.

I have written, spoken, and coached extensively on money and financial principals but I believe there is a lot more to a rich life.

Allow me to share with you what I mean when I say Create and Live the Life of Your Dreams.

First of all, we, as humans, are unlike any other creature on earth.  We have been granted the God-like power of creation.  Where we are in our lives currently is the sum total of all the thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and actions that we have taken up to this point.  We have shaped and are responsible for our lives.

If we are not quite satisfied with where we are we can change it.  In order to change to something different, we have to know what we want it to look like.  Once we have a clear picture of what we want our lives to be we can construct a plan to get us there.

You don’t have to know all the steps, just the next one.  If you take the first step, the second step will show itself.

As you begin to think about and construct your vision for your rich life, you want to look at all areas of life.  There are 2 people whose work I have found very helpful for me in this journey.

Garrett B Gunderson in his Freedom Fast Track Program describes what he calls the 5 Tracks of Human Life Value.  They are Physical, Financial, Mental, Social, and Spiritual.  Another person whose work I greatly respect is Jon Butcher.  In his Lifebook Program, he defines 12 categories: Health & Fitness; Intellectual; Emotional; Character; Spiritual; Love Relationships; Parenting; Financial; Social; Career; Overall Quality of Life; and Life Vision.

As you begin to define what is true for you and what you desire for your rich life, you may find yourself somewhere in between those 2 but at least it is a good place to start.

I believe that you need to have a clear vision of what you want your life to be in all of those areas.

When I speak and teach about a rich life, I am referring to a balance between all of these areas.  You need to define for yourself what you want your social and love relationships to look like.  You want to be clear about your level of fitness and health, at least the areas you have control over.

You want to define for yourself what your ideal career would be; what kind of parent you want to be.  You want to work on growing intellectually.  You want a plan for your overall quality of life and develop a clear life vision.

If this is new to you it may sound like an enormous and impossible task.  It is not, I assure you.  You certainly can spend a great deal of time and effort on it if you wish but it is not truly necessary to do this.

I do feel, however, that you need to spend at least some time thinking about each of the categories that are relevant to your needs.  The more clearly you can see what you want your life to look like, how you want to live, the more likely you will be to achieve it.

A rich life is one of balance.  It is having rich experiences in life.  For some it may be taking in a beautiful sunset with the person you love.  Or maybe it’s a sunrise.

A rich life involves having a career that you enjoy, that you look forward to, that makes you feel alive!  It is found in having good friends and being a good friend to others.

The most important point I can make is that creating and living a rich life is about making choices that enrich your life.  Make decisions that are based on your vision for a rich, enjoyable life.  And most of all make sure that you enjoy a level of balance in all of the areas of your life.

Will it happen overnight?  Unfortunately, probably not.  But, if you take the time to construct your ideal life vision and then begin taking action steps in that direction, it will happen.

Once you have a clear vision for your ideal, rich life, you can begin to live it; right here, right now.  You can be rich right now, right here.  Everyday we make choices.  Decide today to live richly.

Why do people constantly give “Money” as their answer? Does stuff equal richness?

Looking forward to more

Hi Wealth Doctor,

Once we realize as you wrote in a previous blog post here that true wealth and riches are not just monetarily defined (that contributes to it but it is so much about what we do with it, indeed), then we are free indeed to live a rich life NOW.

Don’t wait. Your life is happening now.

A truly rich life is a wonderful tapestry of experiences and healthy balance of all areas in one’s life. I like how you have stated that you need to have a clear vision about what it is you want. Most people “kinda” know what they want – it seems some people go through life not even knowing what they don’t want.

Good post. I think you might tweak it to recommend putting that clear vision onto paper. That is a big part of the secret sauce.

This is a really good post. But then again, all of your posts have been very good!
I really liked what you said at the very end.

“Every day we make choices”

Seems like so many of us forget this quite often! We really do get to make choices every day but we tend to live like we don’t. Powerful stuff!

Wonderful, as always. I think when you say that having a rich life means making choices that enrich your life sums it up really well.

Thank you!

Great post on Living a Rich Life. I’ve heard it said that the man who is Truly rich, is the man who is content with what he has. Heard that somewhere…

I like quite a lot the way I live my life. I am also aware that it could be much better only if I took sometime to plan and make a clear vision.
Will you give us some ideas or action plan?

When I try to make my life “richer” I look at my cat…everything in my house is a “toy” to her. Everything I do is a “game” to her. She eats when she is hungry, she naps when she is tired, she stretches when her muscles are achey, and when she wants to be loved she jumps on your lap and purrs until you give it to her!

Great post!! Getting a clear vision is the first step. You have given us some good things to think about as we create our personal visions.
